Last sketch of 2014

Last sketch of the year 2014. Thought of not sketching today until almost the daytime was over when heart took over mind and decided to finish the year with one more sketch. Also took the advantage of testing the brush my wifey has recently sent to me. It's a Pro Arte Prolene 101, size 16 synthetic brush, however very soft to work with, holds good volume of wet pigment and comes to a brilliant point to paint those sharp corners with ease. Very happy the way it has responded. Wish you all a very Happy and Colorful New Year, 2015!

Thanks a lot again wifey for this brilliant gift!

Medium: watercolor on sketchbook.

Birthday Gift!

A birthday gift that came all the way from across the continent. Thanks a lot my sweet wifey for sending me this beautiful brush! I am delighted!!

There's something special about these bell peppers/capsicum. They become translucent and glow with their beautiful subtle colors under sunlight.

Tiny Watercolor Box

Kindly click on the image for a bigger version
Here's the color box I had mentioned couple of months back when I posted two boat sketches I did in Chennai during my last watercolor workshop there using the same which is up-cycled from a mint box. The wells of the box are divided using quick drying kneaded sealant and painted with couple of coats of white enamel paints. The six small containers are filled with paints from tubes of all 3 primary colors of both warm and cool temperatures. The lid is used for mixing small washes and the whole thing works fine for me for quick sketches. In this sketch, you can notice the relative size of the open box in comparison to a 1/2" flat brush. The dimension of the color box is 2 1/4" W x 1 3/4" D x 1/2 " H.

yesterday, i replaced the original watercolor cakes in my plein air watercolor box with freshly squeezed colors from tube. the original cakes were too dry. i had to add too much of water to make them moist resulting in weak washes eventually taking more layers to reach the certain level of dark tones. it makes the colors appear dull and not fresh. i added the basic primary colors in both warm and cool temperatures, the earth colors and couple of extra ones like payen's grey, sepia, a green [which i hardly use as i mix green from the primary colors] and kept the white cake intact. hope these colors will be better to use on location maintaining freshness. the two brushes are cheap synthetic round brushes but forms very nice points, size: 10 and 6 and on the right is the Reynolds waterproof gel pen i use.
