Importance of Observation Skills for Artists

Kindly click on the image for a bigger version

For artists improving observation skill is as much important as the painting process itself. Looking for interesting view is also a part of art. They are everywhere, needs to keep our eyes open. Missing any one means missing an opportunity. This was sketched from my recent trip to Guwahati at my brother's place while seating at the balcony.

Night Jasmines

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

Winter is the perfect time for these Night Jasmines and this brings sweet memories of my childhood years growing up in Assam. The name comes because this flower blossoms at evening\night and it has a very sweet but strong fragrance spreading all around. In our childhood, we used to pick these flowers in early mornings of winter days from the dew soaked grasses from underneath the trees. These flowers are also cooked, it has a bitter taste and very healthy.

Back to watercolor sketching

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

I have not worked with watercolor for quite sometime now since I had been focusing on drawing with colored pencils, graphite, conte etc. specially on toned paper. Feeling rusty with watercolor however it's a great pleasure to pick up the brush again and mingle with colors as well as try new mediums.

Floral sketches

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view
I did couple of floral sketches yesterday. Floral sketching/drawing/painting is great for practicing 'negative' way [painting around an element] of painting, specially in watercolor. Probably because most of the flower heads are lighter in tonal values than the leaves and stems they are surrounded by and also the layers of the leaves which creates depths within. It's a challenge to paint in negative way as we mostly think in positive shapes but it is fun and worth practicing. These are done from couple of photographs we took when me and my wife visited the flower show held in last January at Lalbagh botanical Garden, Bangalore.

Medium: watercolor on cartridge paper sketchbook.
Size: 11" H x 7 1/2" W [each page].
Time: approx. 40 min each.

Natural Light and Flowers

Kindly click on the image for a bigger version
Capturing the beautiful natural light on flowers and leaves in watercolor is a pleasing experience. Imagine a world without any flowers, we will loose so many beautiful colors. Sketched this today at home from a beautiful photograph taken by wifey at Visthar yesterday where I was invited to attend an artwork-shop as well as paint a banner in conjunction to their annual day event called Bhoomi Habba celebrating 'Just Peace'. I was very tempted to do few on location sketches at their campus but by the time I had finished painting the banner, I was very tired! Hopefully next time!

Quick Sketch

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

Another recent page from my sketchbook. After I finished a painting from the birthday bouquet my wife received I was tempted to go for another quick sketch with much loose approach. This sketch was done without any preliminary underline sketch, using only brush and colors. Started around the main shape of white flowers and painted away towards all the sides.

Glowing dark, Beautiful Bright!

This quick watercolor sketch is from couple of months back but somehow never posted. I remember putting myself to two challenges in that evening. First, to paint directly with color without any graphite underlying guidelines and Second, to paint the dark background in one single layer ! Had fun!

Complimentary colors in nature.

It's that time of the year when all around of Bangalore is blooming with colorful flower trees. The two most noticeable ones are Jacaranda mimosifolia, also know as Jacaranda, Blue Jacaranda [the purple colored one] and Golden bells or the silver trumpet also know as Tabebuia Caraiba [the yellow one]. The best view is when they are seen blossoming together, the power of complimentary colors in nature! did a quick graphite sketch at Government museum and put the colors back at home .

China Pink in watercolor & Graphite versions

Me and my wifey got this beauty Dianthus Chinensis, commonly called as China Pink yesterday and couldn't resist to sketch it when I saw this under early morning sun today. I loved the cluster of its flowers and the grass like shapes of the leaves, a challenge to capture. But every time we pick up a pencil to sketch or draw and a brush to paint, its a challenge to overcome. Every single time!!

medium: watercolor on sketchbook.
size: 6 1'2" H x 5" W

The graphite version of the flower pot sketch I posted earlier today. This is part of a simple step by step process I have decided to do of how simple way we can analyze and structure the underlying line drawing of a fairly complicated subject which I will post soon. so stay tuned !

medium: graphite on 75 gsm photocopy paper.
