Birthday Gift!

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

A birthday gift that came all the way from across the continent. Thanks a lot my sweet wifey for sending me this beautiful brush! I am delighted!!

There's something special about these bell peppers/capsicum. They become translucent and glow with their beautiful subtle colors under sunlight.

Banana Flower or Banana Heart

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

Banana flower is a large, red-purplish blossom that is at the end of a stem growing out of the banana tree. When the protective covers are peeled off it, the small bunches of flowers are revealed which grow into bananas. This flower is eaten with meal in South Asian and Southeast Asian countries. The slight bitternes of its taste may vary between different varieties. Btw, it's also known as 'banana heart'!

Two versions, Two different approaches

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

Did these two sketches couple of weeks back. Started the right one initially and while it was taking time to dry the washes, in between started doing the left one too from the same element. Slightly different approaches for both sketches as the left one was started directly with a big brush to define the big shapes with bold and loose strokes. The left one is on cartridge paper while the right one is on Canson C' A grain paper.

Medium: watercolor on sketchbooks.
Size: 11" H x 7 1/2" W [left], 10" H x 6 1/2" W [right]
Time: 60 min. approx for both.

A sketchbook page

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

A page from my sketchbook. The left sketch was done couple of months back. I was trying to explore usage of complimentary colors by exaggeration. Rather than trying a desaturated background I tried to experimented with a saturated complimentary color green to the red tomato which also happens to have the same hue underside of it giving a chance to blend with lost edges.

The right one is from yesterday morning trying to capture big shapes of colors and values. Noticed this vehicle parked just near our home. The shape and it's structure always fascinates me, specially when under a strong sunlight. It's a great exercise just to concentrate on the bigger shapes and simplify everything else.

Inspirational sketch

"there are inspirations for art everywhere all the time. it's up to us how we respond to these inspirations, by contemplating and expressing in our own ways."

while traveling yesterday morning, i noticed this person with a selling cart under the beautiful morning light. it was a glimpse of only few seconds from a distance as i was riding and had to bring my focus back on road. however the quick glimpse was good as i could grab only the essence of it rather than focusing any details. after coming back home i did a very quick, rough sketch trying to put the vague image on paper. satisfied with what i got, i did another bigger sketch with added elements to it.

Quick still life studies

when we do not have enough time in hand, it's better to go for a simpler still life setting to do a quicker study. few fresh vegetables, natural light from the window and here are couple of studies in different mediums.

yesterday, i almost missed my daily sketch [i am hoping to do at least 1 sketch a day :)] as the day quickly passed by while i painted a watercolor. i somehow dont find much inspiration to sketch at home, specially at night as i love to go out and sketch on location. i still had to find something to do a quick sketch before diner and here it is, the bell peppers! i wished i had the other colored ones too. may be next time i will add the yellow and the red ones too :).
