Sketching after a busy day

When you don't have time to do any sketching the whole day, still try to do whatever you can manage. This watercolor version is what I managed to do today after a busy non sketching day. This is based on one of the graphite sketches I sketched yesterday when I noticed an umbrella moving around under the sun.

Few more sketches from same day that I did at National Gallery of Modern Art, Bangalore. I always find it handy to carry more than one sketchbook while sketching on location. While a wash or layer may be in the process of drying [sometime it may take forever] it's good to utilize the time observing and doing quick sketches of other interesting elements and views around.

I think it will be a nice idea to share with you all one of the many graphite sketches that I keep doing constantly for studying composition, shapes, values, edges etc. This one was done way back in February this year.

Sketching a Teddy in Graphite

As on the page says, sketched my niece's teddy bear . In spite of going out yesterday and today, I couldn't do any sketching. I prefer to use colors only at daytime, hence decided to do a graphite one instead. This was fun to sketch using graphite after a long time ! I think I'll do couple of more teddy sketches in different mediums including watercolor.

In His Loving Memory

Did this portrait in the memory of a great person who believed in sharing knowledge selflessly. A great motivator, mentor, teacher, critique, friend of many, who brought together many like minded artistic souls from diverse fields of work and from around the globe to share and learn together the universal language of visual art. He made people believed in their ability to create art with great inspirations and passion. An architect by profession, he was a traveler, a great photographer and an amazing sketcher in his own unique way. He has left a legacy of artistic knowledge behind him for others to learn from. In his own words - "All that's not given is lost".

Rest in peace, Jorge Royan. You'll be remembered with love for a long time.

Tinted drawing paper test

I found this tinted cool grey Fabriano, 160 gsm paper sometime back at Landmark store and wanted to give it a try. This A4 size paper has some linear texture and suppose to be for dry mediums like pastel, charcoal, graphite. I experimented here with graphite and white Conte, so far it's working well. Will test some more with other mediums like pen & ink and gouache. You can also notice a swatch of brown Conte on top amongst the other one.

Here's another set of sketches I did on this cool grey tinted paper from Fabriano. I am finding it very interesting to work on the tinted paper as it is forcing me to observe, contemplate and work both in terms of light and dark values while still maintaining as much as possible of the mid values of the paper untouched. I am also finding this a great way of doing value studies than a normal white paper. The top left sketch is my smallest watercolor box. The two windows are sketched from a house nearby.

China Pink in watercolor & Graphite versions

Me and my wifey got this beauty Dianthus Chinensis, commonly called as China Pink yesterday and couldn't resist to sketch it when I saw this under early morning sun today. I loved the cluster of its flowers and the grass like shapes of the leaves, a challenge to capture. But every time we pick up a pencil to sketch or draw and a brush to paint, its a challenge to overcome. Every single time!!

Quick still life studies

when we do not have enough time in hand, it's better to go for a simpler still life setting to do a quicker study. few fresh vegetables, natural light from the window and here are couple of studies in different mediums.

Looking at the shapes of Light & Shade

give me some light and shade and i will try to capture it the most abstract way. many have wondered how i capture the most mundane objects. well its those beautiful light and dark shapes attract me most. when i saw this view, i had hardly any time to capture it on my sketchbook as the settings sun vanishes in quick seconds. so i captured the basic shapes in simple lines and added few notes for future reference. later on i completed this sketch with color from these notes.

it's almost impossible to let go a view like this in vein! happy sketching/drawing/painting!
