Birthday Gift!

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

A birthday gift that came all the way from across the continent. Thanks a lot my sweet wifey for sending me this beautiful brush! I am delighted!!

There's something special about these bell peppers/capsicum. They become translucent and glow with their beautiful subtle colors under sunlight.

banana in watercolor I

kindly click on the image for a bigger view

I had been exploring other mediums recently and watercolor took a backseat for quite sometime. Couple of days back I was trying to sketch some bananas in watercolor and I was not able to concentrate or focus fully. Half hearten efforts never lead to satisfactory results, I need to engross in the process of sketching/drawing/painting. Yesterday while sketching this, I tried to focus more !

Sketching White on White

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view
.
What's the most mundane subject you have sketched, drawn or painted!? Well, I tried to sketch a white paper receipt that you get in a super market on a white paper [sketchbook] by keeping it on a white paper! There's nothing exciting about this subject apart from the interesting tonal value shapes and nuances in color variations, warm, cool and neutrals. Still the challenge was to keep everything 'white'. I intentionally kept out the superficial details of the printed text on the receipt in the sketch as the main attempt was to study the tonal values and subtle colors.

In the above image, you can see my simple setup for the study of this live sketch. The picture is taken from a similar angle of view from where I was sketching.

Color mixing palette

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view
This is a sketch of one of my color mixing palette that I use at home studio. I loved the simplicity of this one as well as it's mixing wells. The 12 pigment wells hold 4 each of all the 3 primaries colors, reds, yellows and blues of both warm and cool temperature pigments. I am able to mix almost all secondary and tertiary colors out of these 12 pigments. However I try to do only primary mixes on this palette and use another one for the rest. I'll post a sketch of the other palette also someday!

Above is the list of primary colors marked by their names on my watercolor palette. All the reds, yellows and blues are grouped together. This kind of organized way of putting your colors on the palette [this is not the only way!] helps to pick the color of your choice conveniently without getting into confusion and also allows to compare the hues within themselves. Apart from these colors, I also use Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna and Viridian Hue.

A picture of the simple setup of the color palette while I was working on the sketch. Adding the color tube on the bottom makes it more interesting.

Two versions, Two different approaches

Kindly click on the image for a bigger view

Did these two sketches couple of weeks back. Started the right one initially and while it was taking time to dry the washes, in between started doing the left one too from the same element. Slightly different approaches for both sketches as the left one was started directly with a big brush to define the big shapes with bold and loose strokes. The left one is on cartridge paper while the right one is on Canson C' A grain paper.

Medium: watercolor on sketchbooks.
Size: 11" H x 7 1/2" W [left], 10" H x 6 1/2" W [right]
Time: 60 min. approx for both.

Tiny Watercolor Box

Kindly click on the image for a bigger version
Here's the color box I had mentioned couple of months back when I posted two boat sketches I did in Chennai during my last watercolor workshop there using the same which is up-cycled from a mint box. The wells of the box are divided using quick drying kneaded sealant and painted with couple of coats of white enamel paints. The six small containers are filled with paints from tubes of all 3 primary colors of both warm and cool temperatures. The lid is used for mixing small washes and the whole thing works fine for me for quick sketches. In this sketch, you can notice the relative size of the open box in comparison to a 1/2" flat brush. The dimension of the color box is 2 1/4" W x 1 3/4" D x 1/2 " H.

Natural Light and Flowers

Kindly click on the image for a bigger version
Capturing the beautiful natural light on flowers and leaves in watercolor is a pleasing experience. Imagine a world without any flowers, we will loose so many beautiful colors. Sketched this today at home from a beautiful photograph taken by wifey at Visthar yesterday where I was invited to attend an artwork-shop as well as paint a banner in conjunction to their annual day event called Bhoomi Habba celebrating 'Just Peace'. I was very tempted to do few on location sketches at their campus but by the time I had finished painting the banner, I was very tired! Hopefully next time!

Another Three wheeler

Another quick sketch of this popular mode of short traveling in India. This is somewhat a newer version [model] of this timeless three wheel vehicle though I still like the look of the older rustic ones which are more classic.
